What are you most passionate about when it comes to your work?

The US spends nearly a quarter of GDP on healthcare each year. Despite that figure growing annually, we still face vast disparities in access to affordable, high quality care. I believe there is a tremendous opportunity to change how we deliver and pay for care in this country, and I feel privileged to wake up every day and support mission-driven entrepreneurs innovating to change the status quo in healthcare.

How is NEA different from other VCs?

I got to know the NEA digital health team as a co-investor trying to bring NEA onto my companies' cap tables! I saw firsthand how valuable NEA was as a partner in the boardroom. The firm's unique combination of hands-on company-building, more than four decades of sector expertise, and high-conviction approach to partnership made NEA the first call for any healthcare entrepreneur, and I’m privileged to now be part of that legacy.

How did previous work and life experiences shape who you are today?

My parents are immigrants who rebuilt their lives in the U.S., despite coming into the country with very little. I learned hard work, grit, hustle, and creativity from them; those are values I continue to pursue for myself and seek out in the entrepreneurs I partner with.

For my first job, I was a door-to-door canvasser for a political campaign, with healthcare being one of the key issues. I was able to hear firsthand how people's lives were affected by their access to—or lack thereof—the care they needed. Those stories shaped my core belief in healthcare as a basic human right. Since then, I've dedicated my career to helping improve the healthcare system.

How would a founder describe working with you?

An enthusiastic cheerleader for their team and vision, someone who is always willing to roll up my sleeves to help, and is not afraid to ask hard questions and push them towards excellence.

What’s one question that every founder should be asking a potential investor?

If things aren't going well, how will you react, and what can I expect from you? At NEA, we've built companies for more than four decades, and experience tells us that the path to success is never linear. We aim to be our entrepreneurs' first calls and support system through both the highs and lows of company-building.
